Annual Waterville “Clam Off” Raises $1,400 for FSLH’s Regional Cancer Center
On Tuesday, June 12, 2012, friends and family of Fred “Bubby” Hilsinger presented a $1,400 donation from their annual Clam Off event to Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare’s (FSLH) Regional Cancer Center.
For the past five years, Andrew Danquer has held the clam eating contest at his home in Waterville on Memorial Day weekend. Danquer’s wife’s uncle, Fred “Bubby” Hilsinger, looked forward to attending the event every year. In 2011 he was diagnosed with cancer, however, and passed away in March 2012 before the annual party took place. Hilsinger was cared for at FSLH’s Regional Cancer Center and by oncologist Dr. Atul Butala.
This year was the first time the Clam Off raised money for a local cause in honor of Hilsinger. Fred “Bubby” Hilsinger Memorial Day Clam Off shirts, can koozies and bracelets were sold at the party. There was also a donation bin and items up for raffle that party attendees generously donated.
Money was collected at the party from approximately 200 attendees by Andrew’s mom, a cancer survivor who was treated at The Regional Cancer Center, and his aunt.
“Plans are already in the works for next year’s Clam Off,” said Danquer. “We are really pleased that we were able to raise $1,400 to donate to the Cancer Center and we are hoping next year we can raise even more. It’s a great reason for friends and family to get together and support a good cause while remembering our uncle.”
