Diabetes Prevention Program Offered by Central New York Diabetes Education Program at FSLH
The Central New York Diabetes Education Program (CNY Diabetes) is offering the National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP) that focuses on treating prediabetes to prevent type 2 diabetes. The program begins on Wednesday, July 2, 2014, and classes will be held conveniently during the day or evening.
Type 2 diabetes threatens one in three Americans and 90 percent of these individuals don’t even know they’re at risk. At the prediabetes stage, blood sugar levels are elevated but not so high they can’t be lowered. Lifestyle changes are the key. By taking practical, everyday steps, patients may reverse prediabetes and avoid type 2 diabetes and associated dangers such as heart attack, stroke, blindness and amputation.
In 16 core sessions, classes cover a range of topics including: Tip the Calorie Balance, Four Ways to Healthy Eating Out and Ways to Stay Motivated. Fifteen post core sessions offer topics such as: Food Preparation and Recipe Modification, Stepping up to Physical Activity and Preventing Relapse.
The NDPP is a scientifically proven program to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. To qualify, you must be at high risk for diabetes by scoring a nine or greater on a risk assessment test, have been diagnosed with prediabetes by your doctor or have a history of gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy). The NDPP is the result of a major, multicenter clinical study to validate if modest weight loss, improved meal planning and increased physical activity could delay or prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes in people who were in a prediabetes state. After three years of studying more than 3,000 people, researchers found that the risk of developing diabetes decreased by 58 percent in people who participated in the lifestyle intervention changes. In people ages 60 and older, the results were even more dramatic with the risk of developing diabetes reduced by as much as 70 percent.
The results of this study suggest that millions of people in the United States with prediabetes can lower their risk for type 2 diabetes by making modest lifestyle changes through a structured program. The NDPP includes:
